Dave Potts is a talented singer/songwriter. His latest CD shines through.
There is no doubt that Dave Potts is a master storyteller. He weaves his tales with such skill that listeners can taste the cotton candy at the fair or smell the fresh mown grass of the baseball field. Potts gives us a great collection of songs on his newest CD, $12.99.
For those that have heard Potts live or listened to his CDs, his funny bone shines through. The cover of his CD is a concert poster. It declares The Amazing World Famous Dave Potts Presents: $12.99 [The Record] Breathtakingly Handsome Always in Style. He’s Good Folk. If someone doesn’t see the humor in that, they might need to check their sense of humor.
Potts tells us stories of people that bring them to life. He tells us of a woman who stole his heart for awhile in “Amanda Bramlett.” She was a girl from the past that made an impression and comes to mind even still. Whether this is a girl from Potts’s past or merely a fictional character is irrelevant. Many men had an Amanda Bramlett in their life and can identify with the idea Pott’s presents.
Our dads are some pretty important people in our lives and Potts tips his hat to his father in “Poker Face,” the last track on the CD. We see the respect he has for his dad as we hear about the traits he received from his father. Honoring our father is a commandment from God and Potts does that.
Potts gives us glimpses of life and tells us what is important to him. Most of us would agree that they are important to us too. “The Garden We’re Growing” is a moving piece about war. With the current situation in Iraq songs about war aren’t unusual. The thing about this song is that the point of view it takes is purely thankfulness for the sacrifice of not only the soldiers but their families too.
For those romantic types, “You Deserve Nothing Less” is to his wife. The theme of the song is obvious, but no less important. Our wives are such an important part of our life and deserve all we can give them, and then some.
The folk singer/songwriter genre seems to be saturated. There are a ton of troubadours that have picked up their acoustics and serenade us. In some ways Potts is like your average folksinger. He plays acoustic guitar while he sings his songs.
He is more than that though. He is a storyteller that leads us to where he wants us to go. We feel what emotions he has for us. With his smooth voice and masterfully crafted lyrics, Dave Potts gives us a piece of himself. And with that we see a piece of ourselves.
